Gnaw Their Tongues – Abyss of Longing Throats

Mories, the man behind the blackened audio terror of GNAW THEIR TONGUES is clearly a disturbed but highly productive chap. “Abyss Of Longing Throats” is the latest addition to an already bulging back catalogue that has seen more full lengths and splits in the last few years than most bands manage in twenty and the outcome is as horrific as ever.

GNAW THEIR TONGUES can only be described as an extremely vivid nightmare put to record, a brash mix of PORTAL’s visceral pummeling and THE AXIS OF PERDITION’s twisted atmospheric horror.  Tracks such as “The Holy Body” have an intense claustrophobia that suffocates the listener as though trapped in a burlap sack and being buried alive.

Particularly disturbing is “Through Flesh” which feels like a slow paced chase scene in an especially grim horror movie. It’s an extremely difficult listen, although an album that opens with a track called “Licking The Poison From The Cave Walls” doesn’t exactly imply there will be something for everybody.

In many ways though Mories is a victim of his own success. Such a constant output of such terrifying music can somewhat soften the blow and the now vast back catalogue has never had much time to breath and be fully appreciated. This isn’t exactly easy listening music, it takes some time to be fully explored but there’s normally a new release just round the corner before the full morbid magnificence of the previous effort can be properly admired.

“Abyss Of Longing Throats” is another fine release from GNAW THEIR TONGUES and is well worth the patience of anyone who enjoys disturbing and challenging music. It’s certainly an album best appreciated with headphones in a dark room. But please, someone tell Mories to slow down, wait for the demand, take a break and have a fucking Kit Kat.
