Anyone who keeps an eye on the UK metal scene will have no doubt heard of Damnation Festival by now, as its been making some pretty big waves, and they’ve been attracting some serious quality bands to the darkest corner of Leeds over recent years. Amongst which, the likes of Entombed, The Haunted, Kreator, Pitchshifter, Cathedral, Therapy?, Life of Agony, Paradise Lost, Devin Townsend, Carcass and Ulver have all set foot upon the festival’s hallowed stages.
The great thing about Damnation is its a single day event that’s simply crammed full of acts and enough variation across its halls to ensure there is literally something for everyone. Covering as many genres and sub-genres as you could possibly imagine, it unearths as many gems lower down the bill as it does showcase the headliners… And 2014 is no exception.
2014 sees the festival now in its 10th year and straight from the off, the team lead by Gavin McInally, sought to gain feedback from their loyal fans about the festival format and who should be featured on the bill. Just cast your eyes to the final line-up below while we give you an overview of what to expect, and then tell me that this isn’t something to behold!
The ever elusive Bolt Thrower and their damned reluctance to play live! Well, here is your perfect opportunity to catch these Death Metal titans, and bear witness as they lay waste to Leeds University with their only UK performance this year. Damnation have managed to pull off an absolute blinder in getting these guys to the festival, and they simply wont disappoint. Main man Karl Willetts states: “We always knew if we were ever going to play a festival in the UK, it would be Damnation; as we’ve only heard good things about it from mates who’ve been, and other bands who’ve played it, so we’re chuffed our only UK show of 2014 – and the foreseeable future – will be Damnation’s 10th Anniversary Bash… Grind on!”
This should be reason enough to attend Damnation in 2014, but just in case you needed any further evidence…
…Cannibal Corpse! Surely needing no introduction, these New York brutalists have just released one of their best albums in some years and they’re famous for always putting on a good show – this promises to be an explosive mix and something you cant afford to miss. The band were quote as saying: “We’ve been hearing about the Damnation festival from our fans for a while now, so we’re really excited we’re going to get the chance to play it this year. It’s clearly a killer festival and we’re stoked to be a part of it. See you all this fall!”
These death metal luminaries are backed up with another legendary band, but one of a far more sedate pace: St Vitus. These American doom-mongers will be joining Damnation in celebrating their own anniversary, their 35th anniversary no less! Guitarist Dave Chandler said: “We are very excited to be performing at the Damnation Festival for the first time and it’s even cooler because we are doing it on our 35th Anniversary tour. Two very kick ass things.” St Vitus will be performing their classic “Born Too Late” album in its entirety. Further doom heavyweights in the form of Ahab, Monarch, Atlantis and Bast ensure that those with a fondness for foundation-shaking riffs are very well catered for.
There is plenty of variety on offer this year too, with the likes of the mighty Orange Goblin looking to crush the onlookers with their groove heavy riffs, whilst Stampin’ Ground and Raging Speedhorn will ensure the crowd cant possibly just be onlookers – expect some big pit action from these guys! This variety continues with the dream-like atmospherics of Solstafir and Obsidian Kingdom, Swedish death metallers Aeon, Welsh stoners H A R K, the blackened-tinged-deathing of Revocation, the heavy fuzz of Black Moss, the grim dirge of Corrupt Moral Alter, the blasting Amputated and symphonic thrashing of Xerath.
Black Metal fans have not been forgotten about either, as the excellent <Code>, Fen, Winterfylleth, A Forest of Stars, Wodensthrone and the devastating Anaal Nathrakh will ensure that your ears will be ringing for days after the event!
Festival Director Gavin McInally said: “This year’s line-up is fitting of a tenth anniversary party and with tickets on track to have 4,000 friends with us, it’s going to be a bash to remember.”
The Burning Fist team couldn’t agree more – We’ll see you in Leeds on November 1st!
